Severe weather warning for you and your pet.

We’ve been advised that there is a severe weather event approaching the address listed on your Pet policy.

Stormy weather can be a stressful time for both you and your pets. The loud noises and flashes of light can frighten even the bravest of animals. Here's how to ensure your pet's safety and comfort during a storm:

Before a storm.

Microchip and ID: ensure your pet is microchipped and has a collar with an ID tag containing up-to-date contact information. If they escape during a storm, this will increase the chances of them being returned safely.

Secure your home: check fences, gates, and windows to ensure they are secure and prevent escapes.

Safe space: create a designated safe space for your pet. This could be a crate, a quiet room, or under a bed. Make it comfortable with their favourite bedding, toys, and treats.

During the storm.

Stay indoors: bring all pets inside, even those who typically live outdoors.

Comfort and reassurance: stay calm and offer your pet reassurance through gentle petting and a soothing voice.

Distraction: try to distract your pet with interactive toys, puzzle feeders, or calming music.

Medication: if your pet suffers from severe storm anxiety, consult your veterinarian about anti-anxiety medication.

Tip: Remember to stay informed about weather forecasts and warnings and be patient with your pet as their reactions to storms can vary, offering reassurance and comfort to help them through it.

Creating a pet-friendly emergency kit.

In addition to the general items recommended for an emergency kit, here are some specific items you could include for your pets:

Food, water and bowls.

A three-day supply of non-perishable food and bottled water for your pet. Add some collapsible bowls for easy storage and portability.

Medications and first aid it.

Any medications your pet needs, along with a copy of their prescription and medical records. A basic pet first-aid kit can include items like gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and a thermometer.

Carrier or crate, bedding and toys.

A secure carrier or crate for transporting your pet safely and a blanket or other comfortable bedding for your pet to sleep on. You can add a few of your pet's favourite toys to help them feel comfortable and reduce stress.

Litter box, litter and waste bags.

If you have a cat, include a litter box and litter in your kit and waste bags for cleaning up after your pet.

Important documents.

Copies of your pet's vaccination records, microchip information, and contact information for your veterinarian and emergency contacts.
