Car Insurance FAQs.

Car insurance works by providing you with financial protection if your vehicle is damaged, stolen or in an accident. You pay a regular premium to your insurer, and in return they help cover the costs of eligible claims. The level of protection you receive depends on the policy you choose. If this is the first time you are getting a quote for car insurance you can learn more from our dedicated guides on insurance for learner drivers and P platers.

You can check if a vehicle has Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance on the transport authority website for the state or territory where the vehicle is registered. This will show whether the CTP insurance is active. It  will not check for any other non-mandatory insurance.

Comprehensive car insurance usually offers the highest level of protection for your vehicle and third parties. It typically offers coverage for damage to your own vehicle (i.e. accidental damage, collision damage, hail, etc), damage to other people’s property, theft of your vehicle and fire damage.

There might also be optional coverage available such as hire car cover and windscreen repair.

It’s important to check the Product Disclosure Statement for full coverage details, limits and exclusions that apply.

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) car insurance, also known as Green Slip insurance, is mandatory for driving in Australia. It covers you for financial liability arising from causing bodily injury to others in a car accident.

You can find more information about CTP for your relevant state on the following websites:

New South Wales - https://www.sira.nsw.gov.au/

Queensland -https://maic.qld.gov.au/

South Australia - https://www.ctp.sa.gov.au/

Victoria - https://www.tac.vic.gov.au/

An excess is the amount you might need to contribute towards the cost of repairing your car if you make a claim.

A lower excess may mean a higher premium, but you might pay less yourself at the time of a claim.

A higher excess may mean a lower premium, though you might be responsible for a larger payment if you make a claim.

Consider your financial situation and driving habits when deciding on an excess amount.

Comprehensive car insurance policies in Australia typically cover damage to your vehicle caused by hail. Australia experiences significant hail storms in certain regions, making this an important consideration for many drivers.

If you have a comprehensive policy, you might be covered for the cost of repairs or the market value or agreed value of your car (less your excess) if it's damaged by hail.

It's essential to check the specific terms and conditions of your car insurance policy, as some may have specific exclusions or limitations.

Insurers may consider factors like your age, driving history, the type of car you drive, where you live, and the level of coverage you choose when calculating your premium.

You can find more information on how premiums are calculated on the Insurance Council website.

You can lodge your Car Insurance claim online 24/7 via your My Insurance Portal account, or by calling our claims team on 1300 10 1234.  Login now to start your claim.

To help us process your claim smoothly, please have any relevant details handy, such as the date and location of the incident. If another driver was involved, collecting their name, address, phone number, licence number, and registration details can help us assess who was at fault—but don't worry if you don't have all of this information, you can still lodge your claim.
