We're looking forward to continuing to protect your Miniature Dachshund with Everyday Pet Insurance.

Here's some information about providing great care for your furry friend.

As a Mini Dachshund owner, you naturally want the best for your furry friend. This guide will provide some more information about your furry best friend, from health and grooming to nutrition and training.

Miniature Dachshund-specific health concerns.

Mini Dachshunds, like all breeds, are prone to certain health issues. Understanding potential problems is crucial for early detection and preventative care.

Here are some common Miniature Dachshunds health issues1:

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD): due to their long backs and short legs, Mini Dachshunds are extremely prone to IVDD, a condition where the discs that cushion the vertebrae in the spine can rupture or herniate, causing pain, neurological problems, and even paralysis.

Obesity: Mini Dachshunds can gain weight easily, which exacerbates their back problems and puts extra stress on their joints. Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial.

Eye problems: Mini Dachshunds can be prone to several eye conditions, including Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), cataracts, and glaucoma. Regular eye exams are recommended.

Patellar Luxation: this is a condition where the kneecap can slip out of its normal position, causing pain and lameness.

Hypothyroidism: this is a condition where the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone, which can lead to weight gain, lethargy, and other symptoms.

Vaccinations: consult your vet for a personalised vaccination schedule tailored to your Mini Dachshund's age, lifestyle, and risk factors. Core vaccinations typically include distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus. Optional vaccinations, such as parainfluenza, leptospirosis, and Bordetella, may be recommended depending on your dog's exposure to other dogs and environments.

Flea and tick prevention: protect your Mini Dachshund from fleas and ticks with regular preventative treatments. Discuss options with your vet, including topical solutions, chewable tablets, and collars. Consider the best option for your dog's individual needs and potential sensitivities.

Worming: regular deworming is essential for Mini Dachshunds. Work with your vet to establish a worming schedule that covers heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, and tapeworm. They can advise on the most effective products and frequency of treatment. Learn more about worming your dog or puppy.

Grooming your Mini Dachshunds.

Miniature Dachshunds come in three coat varieties: smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired. Each type has slightly different grooming needs, but all require regular attention to maintain a healthy coat and prevent skin problems.

Mini Dachshund grooming needs:

Shedding management: regular brushing is crucial, especially for smooth and longhaired varieties.

Ear care: Mini Dachshunds, especially those with floppy ears, are prone to ear infections. Clean their ears weekly with a dog-specific ear cleaner and cotton balls or pads. Avoid using cotton swabs inside the ear canal. If you're unsure how to clean your Mini Dachshund' ears, ask your vet for advice.

Nail trimming: keep your Mini Dachshund's nails trimmed to a healthy length to prevent discomfort and potential mobility issues. Trim them regularly with dog nail clippers, being careful not to cut the quick (the pink part of the nail containing blood vessels and nerves). If you're unsure how to trim their nails, ask your vet or a groomer for a demonstration.

Learn more about grooming your dog at home. You can also consider professional grooming every few months for a trim and deeper coat care.

Advanced coat maintenance tips:

Coat health: a healthy diet supports a shiny coat. Omega fatty acids are beneficial; consider fish oil supplements. Talk to your vet about dietary options.

Brushing: the frequency and type of brush depend on the coat:

Smooth coat: weekly brushing with a soft bristle brush or rubber grooming mitt to remove loose hair and keep the coat shiny.

Wirehaired coat: regular hand stripping (or clipping) is necessary to maintain the wiry texture. Brush weekly with a stiff bristle brush.

Longhaired coat: daily brushing with a slicker brush and comb is essential to prevent mats and tangles. Pay special attention to feathering on the ears, legs, and tail. Bathing: Bathe your Mini Dachshund only when necessary, as over-bathing can dry out their skin. Use a dog-specific shampoo and conditioner, and rinse thoroughly.

Nutrition and diet to fuel your Mini Dachshund.

A balanced diet can be essential for your Miniature Dachshund's health and well-being.

Mini Dachshund with food bowl

High-quality food.

Choose a dog food with high-quality protein as the main ingredient. Avoid foods with excessive fillers and artificial additives. There are 3 different diet types:

Kibble: convenient and affordable, but choose a high-quality brand.

Raw: requires careful handling and preparation but can be beneficial for some dogs.

Home-cooked: allows control over ingredients but requires careful planning to ensure nutritional balance.

Learn more about human foods dogs can and can't eat.

Tip: like many dog breeds, Mini Dachshunds can experience food allergies and sensitivities (chicken, beef, dairy, wheat are common). Healthy weight is crucial due to their IVDD risk. Excess weight strains their backs and joints. Diet, portion control, and vet-approved exercise are key, as well as avoiding high-impact activities.

Keeping your Miniature Dachshund engaged.

Mini Dachshunds are intelligent and curious, though their independent streak can sometimes make training a bit more challenging. They still need mental and physical stimulation, but their size and build should be considered.

Enrichment activities.

Puzzle toys: small, dog-safe puzzle toys that dispense treats or require problem-solving can keep their minds active and prevent boredom. This can be especially helpful to curb chewing or digging behaviours.

Interactive games: while fetch might not be their favorite, Mini Dachshunds enjoy games like hide-and-seek with small toys, or chasing a laser pointer. Short, gentle play sessions are best, and always supervise to prevent injury.

Training: early and consistent training is important. Focus on basic commands (sit, stay, come, down) using positive reinforcement methods. Due to their back issues, agility or high-impact activities are not recommended. Trick training, like teaching them to "roll over," can be a good mental exercise.

Socialising: socialise your Mini Dachshund puppy early and often to help them become comfortable around different people, children, and other (small) animals. Positive experiences during puppyhood are crucial. Continue socialisation throughout their life, but always be mindful of their size and protect them from larger dogs.

Mini Dachshund community and resources.

Connect with other Mini Dachshund owners and enthusiasts! Online forums, such as www.dachshund-talk.com, breed-specific social media groups, and local kennel clubs are great resources. Search for "Miniature Dachshund" groups in your area or online. These communities can offer valuable advice, support, and information specific to the breed, particularly regarding back health and IVDD. You can often find recommendations for vets experienced with Dachshunds, as well as information on local events, training opportunities (keeping their back limitations in mind), and advice on finding reputable breeders.

While there isn't one single, centralised website, a quick online search for "Mini Dachshund owners" or "Dachshund rescue" will reveal numerous resources dedicated to Mini Dachshunds, including breed information, care guides, and online communities. If you're unsure about any advice you find, make sure to consult your vet.

Everyday Pet Insurance is here for you.
