Why it’s important for seniors to consider travel insurance.

Retirement often brings the freedom to explore the world, but as we age, our travel needs evolve. That's why it's important for seniors to consider travel insurance that may protect them.

Higher medical costs.

Seniors may become more susceptible to illness and injury while travelling. Medical treatment abroad or on a cruise can be expensive, and Medicare often doesn't provide coverage outside of Australia. Travel insurance can help cover these costs, including emergency medical care, hospitalisation, or even emergency medical evacuation back home.

Existing medical conditions.

Many seniors might have existing medical conditions that could flare up while traveling. Travel insurance can help cover the costs of treating these conditions if they worsen during your trip.

Trip cancellations and interruptions.

Unexpected events like illness, family emergencies, or even natural disasters can force you to cancel or cut your trip short. Travel insurance may help reimburse you some non-refundable costs of your trip.

Lost luggage and personal belongings.

Travel insurance can provide coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal belongings, ensuring you're not left stranded without essentials.

What to look for when choosing travel insurance.

When choosing travel insurance cover for seniors, there are a few key things to keep in mind:

Coverage for medical expenses.

Make sure your policy provides sufficient coverage for medical expenses, including hospitalisation, surgery, and emergency medical evacuation.

Coverage for existing medical conditions.

If you have any existing medical conditions, check if your policy covers them.

Coverage for trip cancellations.

Look for a policy that provides coverage for trip cancellations due to a medical emergency or other covered reasons.

24/7 emergency assistance.

Choose a policy with 24/7 emergency assistance services that can provide support and guidance in case of any unforeseen events.

Suitable coverage limits.

Choose a policy with coverage limits that suit your needs to ensure you have enough protection in case of a major medical emergency or other expensive event.

Cruise benefits.

If you're planning a cruise, ensure your policy is suitable for cruise-related incidents.

Tips for seniors buying travel insurance.

Here are some additional tips for seniors buying travel insurance:

Buy your policy early: when you book your trip, you can start looking at travel insurance, so you can select the cover option that best suits your needs.

Disclose your medical history: be honest and upfront about your medical history when you apply for travel insurance. This will help ensure that you have the right coverage in place.

Read the PDS: before you purchase a policy, take the time to read the Product Disclosure Statement and any important policy documents.

Keep your policy information handy: when you travel, keep your policy information with you at all times. This will make it easier to make a claim if you need to.

Travel insurance can help you enjoy your trip knowing you may be protected in case of a medical emergency, trip cancellation, or other unforeseen event.
